Gennie Tierney, RN

Gennie began teaching Yoga in Wisconsin in 1979 after completing a Yoga Teacher Training Course at the Yoga Meditation Society of Madison. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin and has taught yoga, exercise, and nutrition at the Himalayan Institute's Combined Therapy program in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. In addition to her Yoga Teacher Certification, Gennie is also certified in Jin Shin Jytsu (Acu-pressure). Gennie has traveled through Europe, India, Bali, and Latin America, and has studied extensively with Rodney Yee, Yogiraj Behramji, Angela Farmer, Andrei Ram, Dean Lerner, Manuso Manos, and Ana Forest.

In addition to her classes at the Spiritual Life Society, Gennie teaches private Yoga classes and teaches at local community centers and clubs. She also is has a certified practitioner of of Jin Shin Jytsu (Acu-pressure).

  • Studying Yoga since 1975 and teaching Hatha Yoga since 1979

  • Certified by the Spiritual Life Society to teach Hatha Yoga in 1984. Has completed Yoga Teacher Training courses with Yogiraj Behramji, Yoga Meditation Society of Madison, Rodney Yee, and Anna Forrest. Gennie has also studied regularly with many senior teachers including Manuso Manos, Dean Lean Lerner, Angela Farmer, and others.

    Completed Yoga Teacher Training and received certification in 1984.

  • Yoga & Meditation School, Rockford, IL and San Diego, CA
    Studied Hatha Yoga intensively with Yogiraj Behramji (Behram Guard) from 1979 to 1984. Behramji had studied with Iyengar for many years in India in the early 1960s. He received the title of Yogiraj from Swami Rama of the Himalayas in the mid 1970s. In the late 1970s, Behramji and his wife Katy moved to San Diego where they continued to teach, and Gennie studied with them there in 1981 and 1982.

  • Himalayan International Institute, Honesdale, PA
    Staff member of the Combined Therapy Program program for 6 months in 1982. This program combined traditional and alternative medicine including Yoga and Ayurveda. During this time and also at the Yoga Mediation Society of Madison, Gennie had the opportunity to study intensely with most of the senior teachers including Swami Rama, Rudolf Ballentine, Swami Ajaya; Pandit Usharbud Arya; John Clarke; Pandit Rajmani Tigunait; Charles Bates; Phil Nuernberger; John Harvey; and Justin O'Brien.

  • Yoga Meditation Society of Madison, Madison, Wisconsin (an affiliated center of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy)
    Began formal study of Yoga and Meditation in 1975, and completed Yoga Teacher Training in 1981. Began teaching Hatha Yoga in 1981.

  • Various other studies include:
    Annual week of Teacher training with Rodney Yee in Columbus, Ohio; Manju Pattabhi Jois (2004); Manouso Manos weekend workshops, Cleveland Heigths (2003) and Oberlin, Ohio (1998-1999); Dean Lerner (no relation!) at Bhumi's, Cleveland, Ohio (2001);1st Annual Midwest Yoga Conference, (June, 2000); Rama Birch workshop at Bhumi's, Cleveland, Ohio (2000); Other studies during the 1980s-1990s include various programs with Swami Shantanand (OH & PA), Sam Dworkis (Miami, FL); Judith Lasiter (Pittsburg, PA); Amrit Desai, Canton, OH; Lilias Folan (Wooster, OH); Yoga Trip to India, 1984; Meditation studies with Pir Vilayat Khan, 1980-1990; Attended and staffed many of the International Congresses" on Yoga sponsored by the Himalayan Institute in Chicago and New York from 1975 to 1985.
